Chiropractic Care at Specialty Surgical Center

At Specialty Surgical Center in Sparta, New Jersey, chiropractic care is available for patients with chronic pain conditions including back pain, headaches, neck pain and arthritis pain.

Depending on your condition, chiropractic therapies may be supplemented with pain management therapies. Conditions like sciatica, spinal stenosis, and herniated discs often see improvement with a combined treatment program of interventional pain management and chiropractic care.

Spinal manipulation is sometimes called spinal manipulative therapy and is used to restore or enhance the function of the spine. Spinal manipulation has shown to be beneficial for a variety of pain conditions, including migraine, back pain, neck pain, and neck-related headaches.

Applied kinesiology is the study of how the body moves – specifically, how muscles are related with the internal organs. Through applied kinesiology, muscle weakness will be addressed for their links to nerve damage, reduced blood supply, or other internal issues.

Upper cervical specific chiropractic care addresses issues including dizziness and vertigo, as the spine plays a definite role in the balance and equilibrium of the body. The upper joints of the neck are also involved in coordinating body, hand, and eye movements, and so if there are issues with the cervical joints of the neck, there can be other issues with the rest of the body.

In addition to these chiropractic services, there are also many others that are provided to patients of Specialty Surgical Center of Sparta, New Jersey. For more information on how chiropractic care can help you, make an appointment at Specialty Surgical Center by calling 973-940-3166

Orthopedic Surgery at Specialty Surgical Center

Orthopedic surgery is the specialty concerning the musculoskeletal system. At Specialty Surgical Center in Sparta, New Jersey, orthopedic procedures constitute the bulk of surgeries performed, and, with about 3,000 procedures per year, arthroscopic knee surgery is the most common procedure.

At Specialty Surgical Center, we provide both knee and shoulder surgeries arthroscopically, a technique that is performed through small incisions and utilizes a camera that relays images onto a larger screen where the surgeon can get a better view of the internal structures of the body. Arthroscopic surgeries have many benefits over traditional open surgeries in that they require shorter surgery times, minimize blood loss, and reduce recovery time following the procedure.

Back and spine surgeries also require the expertise of an orthopedic surgeon, and may include minimally invasive spinal fusions or discectomy. At Specialty Surgical Center, all procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning they are minimally invasive and patients are able to return home the same day – including back and spine surgeries.

Also available at Specialty Surgical Center is minimally invasive hip replacement surgery that is also performed on an outpatient basis. This procedure has many benefits over the traditional, open hip replacement surgery in that there is less muscle damage, minimized blood loss, patients are able to return home the same day, and the recovery time is significantly reduced. There are other joint replacement surgeries that are performed at Specialty Surgical Center that are also minimally invasive and outpatient.

At Specialty Surgical Center, patients get the advantage of cutting-edge medical technology and procedures combined with a medical team that cares about their patients and makes their safety and comfort a priority.

Interventional Pain Management at Specialty Surgical Center

Chronic pain affects over 100 million Americans and can be extremely difficult to live with. At Specialty Surgical Center in Sparta, New Jersey, pain management specialists provide outpatient procedures for chronic pain sufferers to help them live more functional, higher quality lives.

Chronic pain is considered any pain condition where the pain symptoms have lasted three months or more. This may include arthritis, migraines, fibromyalgia, back pain, neck pain, neuropathy conditions, and any other condition where pain has lasted beyond three months. Chronic pain can be difficult to manage, but the use of interventional pain management techniques can reduce symptoms.

Interventional pain management includes procedures that are minimally invasive and performed on an outpatient basis. Injections and nerve blocks are among the most common interventional pain management procedures performed at Specialty Surgical Center.

Injections consist of transforaminal injections and corticosteroid injections, both of which are administered at the site of pain. These injections are intended to both quickly relieve pain with a local anesthetic, and then continue with their pain relieving properties through the use of a long acting steroid.

Nerve blocks, including facet joint blocks, medial branch blocks, and sympathetic nerve blocks, effectively interrupt the flow of pain signals from the area of nerve damage to the brain. This interruption will cause the patient to feel significantly less if any pain. Both injections and nerve blocks are intended to last for several months and can be repeated if the patient suffers recurring pain.

Specialty Surgical Center is located in Sparta, New Jersey and our staff consists of board certified surgeons and anesthesiologists performing procedures in Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, Spinal Care, Podiatry, Urology, Pain Management, ENT, Hand Surgery, Lithotripsy, Brachytherapy, GYN and Laser Surgery.

Spine Surgery at Specialty Surgical Center

For chronic back pain that is caused by compression of the spinal nerves or a spinal fracture, spinal surgery may be the recommended treatment. At Specialty Surgical Center in Sparta, New Jersey, our spine surgeons are experts in both invasive and minimally invasive spine surgeries.

For patients who have tried conservative treatment options and have not regained function or experienced relief from pain, spine surgery may be used to reduce pain and improve function of the spine.

If it has been determined that a herniated disc is the cause of your chronic back pain, you may be a candidate for a discectomy, which is the removal of damaged disc material that is causing compression of the nerves in the spine.

For those suffering from arthritis of the spine, a laminectomy may be performed. This surgery removes the lamina, or the back part of the vertebrae covering the spinal canal. Removal of the lamina creates space in the spinal canal, which will relieve pressure on the spinal cord and surrounding spinal nerves.

Fusion surgery will join two vertebrae together to stop motion of the joint. Patients who suffer from degenerative disc disease are often candidates for fusion surgery, as are those who have spinal fractures, scoliosis, or spinal deformity.

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are minimally invasive spine surgeries that stabilize the spine following a spinal compression fracture. These fractures are common in patients who have osteoporosis and have experienced weakening of the spinal bones. Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are used to stabilize the internal structure of the spine and can relieve pain.

Hand Surgery at Specialty Surgical Center

At Specialty Surgical Center in Sparta, New Jersey, patients have access to outpatient hand surgery services. Hand pain and dysfunction can dramatically decrease quality of life as our hands often help us be independent through driving and working, and even in basic tasks such as feeding and dressing ourselves.

At Specialty Surgical Center, one of the most common conditions treated is carpal tunnel. This is a painful condition that comes from the compression of the median nerve as it travels through the wrist. The median nerve contributes to the sensations of the palm side of the hand and some of the small muscle control of the fingers and thumb. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway that the median nerve runs through, and through overuse, this passageway can narrow, which puts pressure on the median nerve. Carpal tunnel release surgery is performed at Specialty Surgical Center to alleviate pain due to carpal tunnel syndrome, and consists of surgically cutting the band of tissue that is located around the wrist to allow for relief of pressure on the median nerve.

For those patients who suffer from Dupuytren’s Contracture, a condition that causes the fingers to contract inward, a fasciotomy at Specialty Surgical Center may help. Fasciotomy surgeries may also be used for other conditions, and generally involves surgically cutting tissue that has thickened over time, causing the contracture.

Other hand procedures at Specialty Surgical Center include nerve and tendon repair of the hand and skin grafts.

Gynecologic Surgery at Specialty Surgical Center

At Specialty Surgical Center in Sparta, New Jersey, our experienced gynecology partners provide procedures that can both determine a diagnosis or manage an existing condition. Our medical team provides a compassionate, comfortable, and safe experience for a variety of gynecologic surgeries.

Adhesions are bands of scar tissue that commonly form following surgery. These bands are abnormal and can join internal structures together that should not be joined, such as organs. Adhesiolysis is the surgical removal of these adhesions and is a common procedure performed at Specialty Surgical Center.

Colposcopy is a method for the surgeon to utilize a small magnifying device to identify the cause of abnormal results in a PAP test. If an area of abnormality is determined during the colposcopy, the doctor may perform a cervical biopsy to examine the tissue under further magnification and testing.

Hysteroscopy can be performed to diagnose and treat cases of abnormal uterine or vaginal bleeding. This procedure at Specialty Surgical Center can be used both as a diagnostic procedure and to treat female reproductive issues.

Hysterectomy is another procedure that is performed at Specialty Surgical Center and involves the removal of the uterus, which effectively ends menstruation and the ability to become pregnant. A hysterectomy may be recommended for abnormal vaginal bleeding that has been treated by other methods and remains uncontrolled, cervical or uterine cancer, severe endometriosis, and other female reproductive conditions.

Spinal Cord Stimulation for Chronic Pain Patients

Many people who have chronic pain conditions have tried multiple treatments and therapies to relieve their pain – and for some people, none of these will work. At that point, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) may be an option recommended, and the procedure can be performed safely and comfortably at Specialty Surgical Center in Sparta, New Jersey.

Spinal cord stimulation uses electrical current to interrupt the pathway of pain to the brain, which effectively relieves pain. Instead of the sensation of pain, the patient will feel a gentle humming or buzzing, and many report that the sensation is a pleasant feeling.

Patients who suffer from nerve pain syndromes like complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) or diabetic neuropathy may benefit from spinal cord stimulation. Failed back surgery syndrome patients may also get pain relief from spinal cord stimulation.

One of the benefits of spinal cord stimulation is that patients are able to undergo a trial of the treatment before permanent implantation. The electric leads will be placed under the skin and are attached to a small, handheld generator that is programmed by the physician to provide the best pain relief for the patient. After the trial, if the patient has received satisfactory relief from pain, a permanent spinal cord stimulator may be implanted.

In the permanent placement procedure, the leads are again placed under the skin, and the generator will be placed in the abdomen or buttock. The patient will have a remote control to change the levels of the device for custom pain relief. The entire system is battery powered, and may need a replacement battery every two to five years.

Spinal cord stimulation may not work for everyone, and most studies report that 50-60% of people who undergo the trial experience relief from their chronic pain. Side effects of SCS are minimal, and patients can participate in any activities, including swimming.

Outpatient ACL Repairs

The anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, lies diagonally in the knee, forming an “X” with the posterior cruciate ligament. These two ligaments are responsible for controlling sideways movement of the knee and helping it remain stable and in place. An injury to the ACL is one of the most common sports injuries and can be extremely painful. At Specialty Surgical Center in Sparta, New Jersey, the orthopedic team performs outpatient surgery to repair the ACL and help patients get back into the activities they would like to be involved in.

The ACL can be strained, sprained, and torn. Most ACL injuries are complete or nearly complete tears. Anterior cruciate ligament injuries often occur in sports where players have to change direction or stop very quickly. Football and basketball players are generally at risk for ACL injuries. One of the most common indicators of an ACL injury is a “popping” sensation, and loss of strength in the knee. Pain, swelling, and loss of range of motion may also occur.

Some ACL injuries are minor and can heal with conservative treatments, but for those that require surgery, it is usually performed in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) like Specialty Surgical Center. The most common procedure is arthroscopic repair, in which the surgeon will make a small incision and use a camera with the image projected onto a screen. This surgical approach is advantageous in that it requires a smaller incision, there is less blood loss, and healing time is often shorter than with traditional surgery.

Once the surgery is complete, patients will undergo a rehabilitation process that may include physical therapy to help rebuild strength, stability, and range of motion.

Minimally Invasive Hysterectomy at Outpatient Surgery Centers

Historically, a hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that requires open abdominal surgery, a hospital stay for several days to recover, and limitations to movement as the wound heals. At Specialty Surgical Center, hysterectomies are performed using minimally invasive techniques and on an outpatient basis, which means that the recovery time is shorter, pain is less, and patients are able to return home the same day of their procedure.

According to WebMd.com, more than 600,000 hysterectomies are performed every year in the United States, and only about 20% of those are minimally invasive. However, many physicians argue that more of the 80% of traditionally performed hysterectomies could be done using minimally invasive techniques, including total laparoscopic hysterectomy – in which a small incision will be made in the abdomen or the belly button – and laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy – which is done through the vagina using a laparoscope.

One of the greatest benefits in the use of minimally invasive techniques is the significant reduction in healing time. Patients who undergo traditional hysterectomies that are performed through a large abdominal incision generally take six weeks to recover, while those who undergo minimally invasive hysterectomies recover in two weeks or less. Other benefits include minimal blood loss, reduced risk of infection, and lower postop pain.

While there may be factors that rule some patients out for minimally invasive hysterectomy surgery, many patients are candidates for this option. It’s important to find a surgeon who is experienced in the procedure and can answer all of your questions. At an outpatient surgery center like Specialty Surgery Center in Sparta, New Jersey, a minimally invasive hysterectomy can be an extremely safe option and can have patients on the road to recovery and back to their lives very quickly.

To find out if you are a candidate for a minimally invasive hysterectomy, speak to your surgeon or call Specialty Surgery Center at 973-940-3166.
